Ford Ranger Wildtrak

It is a given that for a ride to be anointed as a car of the year, there’s bound to be at the very least, something about said ride. I mean it wouldn’t even be considered in the first place if something does not merit the whole issue.

And of course the MCOTY award is one of the most prestigious car awards in the local market. Organized by the Automotive Institute, Robotic & IoT Malaysia (formerly known as the Malaysian Automotive Institute), award winners are judged on five criteria: external and internal design, technical specifications and engineering innovation, safety features, energy-saving, environmentally-friendly and value to money as a whole.

And so it was that the critically acclaimed Ford Ranger 2.2L Wildtrak, with its rugged good looks, smart and capable dynamics, and the sum of all its class leading engineering was so named the 2018 Malaysian Car of the Year, pickup of the year.

So what gives? What was it that was so ephemeral that this most potent of Rangers arrived seemingly at a canter and got almost immediately whisked away right to the top of the pickup pecking order? Sold at RM127,888 for RM137,888 for Peninsular Malaysia (RM133,888 for Sabah and Sarawak, the latest Ford Ranger Wildtrak offers consumers a robust, most capable and versatile pickup truck at affordable prices

This Ford Ranger Wildtrak comes with a Duratorq 2.2 liter diesel engine TDCi capable of producing 160ps at just 3000 revs with max 385Nm of torque at your beckoning from just a whisker above idling at 1.600 to 2,600 rpm. All of the above pickup powering forces goes direct to the tarmac via a six-speed automatic transmission, with an even state of tune to ensure ‘adequate’ delivery as per both performance and economy, the latest buzzword that seems set to stay for quite a while.

Safety features abound in the new Ranger Wildtrak 2.2L which includes among others: Lane Departure Warning, Forward Collision Alert that provides a visual warning on the windscreen, Estimated Electronic Stability with grip control, Hill Launch Assist, Hill Descent Control, Electric Brakes assist (EBA), a total of 16 airbags, ISOFIX seats all of which covers both passive and active safety considerations.

All of the above safety features comes in handy considering the 2.2L Wildtrak pickup capability, as it was built ‘Ford tough’ and designed to easily navigate the multitude of road surfaces both on and offroad. Indeed, it certainly is at home regardless of the harshest surfaces our local terrain has to offer as the Ford Ranger Wildtrak 2.2L has a 235-mm-wide land clearance, a water-navigating capability of 800 mm, and load towing capability of some 3 and a half tons!

Amidst all the terrain conquering prowess the new Wildtrak also takes care of the occupants extremely well with plush comfort up front and around the back as well. The premium feel is palpable thanks to solid cushioning, high quality material, eye-pleasing design all around including the console design and cabin in its entirety. The Ford Ranger Wildtrak also comes with smart features such as the SYNC 3 system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connections.

With such handy occupants first features it is little wonder that the Ranger regardless of its variants be it the ‘regular’ Ranger or ‘extra crispy’ Wildtrak variant, continues to be the best-selling Ford model in Malaysia.

Just to reemphasis the point here’s another handy trivia for your benefit: the Ranger is also the best selling pickup truck on the market. In the third quarter of 2018, Ranger sales jumped by 61 percent when 2,245 units were sold.
