Yet another grueling Sepang 1000km, S1K for short, has wrapped up and Team Proton R3 once again claims victory for the third time on the trot at Sepang famed endurance race. The national team brought could not have concluded the 2019 season with a better spectacle as all three R3 entrants pulled off an amazing race.
The Proton Iriz piloted by Mitchell Cheah and Farique Hairuman dominated the race through safety cars and chaotic weather for a total of nine hours despite the race rules initially only needing to complete 181 laps. Coming in second place was the brand new 2019 R3 Saga driven by Syafiq Ali and Admi Shahrul.
The third R3 car on track was driven by an all-ladies team from the MSF-R3 Lady Drivers Search program. Taking turns on the driver’s seat was Nurul Husna, celebrity and racer Faye Kusairi, and lead driver, Leona Chin, also other known as the Drift Queen of Malaysia.
The all-ladies team were plagued by technical issues during qualifying which put them at a worrying 26th on the grid for the race start but no one was prepared to witness the all-out assault they put on against the other teams. The ladies fought their way up to an amazing 7th place overall beating all other lady drivers by the end of the race simply proving that their skills and determination know no limits.
It was an impressive race all round by the teams that participated. Everyone showed a huge amount of sportsmanship both on and off track, from pit etiquettes to respecting racing lines. Heck, it even got the little boy in me excited and imagining that one day, I too could be in the driver seat of one of these cars.
