Good Evening, may I interest you in a mildly spicy AMG entrée?
– 306hp 400Nm from a 2.0L four-banger.
– 7 speed Dual CLutch Transmission
– AMG 4MATIC All-Wheel-Drive
– Edition 1 paraphernalia
My Oh My quite a kick in the belly the baby AMG is! In terms of both performance and appearances, it fits the bill. Now, of course, the A35 cannot be a complete of a package as the A45, that would be a marketing disaster, but it is a performance hatchback in its own right.
If I were to be honest, and I annoyingly often am, the A35 looks better than the A45S to my eye. Something about the deeper color and multi-spoke wheels gives it a sophisticated touch rather than “Look At Me, I’m a sports car”. The performance on the other hand…..
She’ll hit 100km/h from 0 in just 4.7 seconds, enough to worry a BMW M2 driver. It’ll then ride the wave of torque on to the limited top speed of 250km/h. An interesting fact about the A35 is that peak torque of 400Nm comes in between 3000 and 4000rpms, making it pretty accessible without the need to hit high revs.
Powering it isn’t the infamous M139 unit but the M260 with twin-scroll tech and water charge-air cooler. Chucking you forward through all seven gears and keeping you planted to the road via the 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system, it’s a perfect recipe on paper. Yet to be driven.
Aside from a tad less aggressive styling notes, the Edition 1 package on the A35 really enhances the package as a macho heavy hitter. The hot hatch hype is very much the trend right now and this one hits a home run. While the A45S is more purposeful, this comes off as more usable. Think of it as Low Fat Milk. Ticks all the boxes.
The 19 inch AMG multi-spoke light-alloy wheels look painful to keep clean but are entirely worth it for the look it is going for and the little known fact is that they’re aerodynamically optimized. No idea how to prove it but I shall take their word on it. The gold color though really works for me. My friends don’t share my opinion but give me more GOLD WHEELS! Look at it pop, so classy.
The exhaust on the A35 is sedated both visually and acoustically. I have no doubt that while this a distinguishing feature on the A35 over the A45S, most owners are going to just swap it for the bigger model anyways.
When the previous generation AMG hatchbacks came along, I never fancied their styling but this time around, especially with this baby AMG out, it’s got me talking to banks on arranging a loan. The asking price is high at RM379,888. Steep for a hatchback but affordable for a fast and potent performance machine. If you concur, get your paperwork started. Or better still, purchase it via AMGPro Financing that is packed with benefits for you to exploit for a sense of security during ownership.
