Throughout its four editions never had the confirmed entries for the Sepang 1000 Kilometre Endurance Race (S1K) exceed 30. Prior to last year’s 22 entries, 2014 had 25 while 27 cars were flagged off for the 2013 edition. Regardless of what your take might be of the above observation, one thing is unquestionably obvious: with 31 entries confirmed for the 2016 S1K, our local motor racing arena is livelier and healthier than ever.
As this news piece is uploaded into our website the 31 entries are already at it, gunning it for the morning’s official practice before really gunning come the official qualifying session a little later. The 181 lap S1K race around the 5.543km Sepang Formula 1 track will be flagged off at about noon tomorrow; 1230pm Saturday, September 3.
One additional sub-event around this year’s S1K is its inclusion in the Tourism Selangor’s Day Out happenings – a promotional activity that seeks to raise awareness and promote what interesting and exciting weekend activities Selangor has to offer. Up to 60 participants including bloggers, media, influencers, guests and staff of Tourism Selangor will participate in the half-day activity on 3 September, which includes a behind the scene circuit tour during the S1K and go-karting at the circuit.
In his earlier statement SIC Chief Executive Officer Dato’ Razlan Razali remarked on the contributing factors for the marked increase in entries as well as the general interest of the motoring enthusiasts both locally and around the region. Among others being SIC track and sporting department’s high profile approach in recruiting participants, the timing of the event, and perhaps most crucially as per the S1K race teams itself was the concerted effort to ensure that the cost of racing at Sepang is more affordable through initiatives such as the appointment of Yokohama as the Official Tire for the event. Also SIC have increased publicity for the race via its social media platforms.
Speaking at the briefing session for the S1K drivers and team managers on Thursday, Dato’ Razlan remarked on the host of leading drivers in the entry list, which added to the excitement and fan appeal of the event. “It is very encouraging to see names like Faidzil Alang, Farique Hairuman, Farriz Fauzi, Keifli Othman, Tengku Djan Ley Tengku Mahaleel and even celebrity Zizan Razak on the entry list this year. The increased interest is very positive for the future of our homegrown events like the S1K here in Sepang. I also encourage all the S1K participants to take part in our MCS championship. An expanded entry list and injection of fresh blood will be beneficial to Malaysian four-wheel racing,” Dato’ Razlan said.
To all Race fans, motoring enthusiasts and sport lovers, come and watch the 2016 S1K tomorrow at noon, bring your family along and witness Malaysia’s hotshot race drivers both pro and amateurs battling it out, with of course an International cast of drivers and engineers to further spice things up.!
