UMW Toyota Motor Sdn. Bhd. served a double entrée earlier today with the simultaneous launches of the eighth generation Hilux pickup, and the Fortuner SUV in its second generation guise. Both these internationally acclaimed Toyota models, having introduced by the Japan car giant for the global market earlier are CKD variants assembled at UMWT’s new Shah Alam plant.


The best-selling pickup in Malaysia for the 10th year running, the brand new Hilux comes with a total of 6 models in single and double cab guises, as well as both 4×2 and 4×4 drivetrain configurations. The 2.8G 4×4 auto tops the Hilux range followed by a single cab 2.4 4×2 manual and a number of double cab options, a 2.4 4×2 manual, a 2.4 Standard 4×4 manual, a 2.4G 4×4 manual and 2.4G 4×4 auto. Having sold more than 200, 000 units of the Hilux, the numerous updates and refinements encompassing the aesthetics and the inner-workings of the brand new Hilux seems set to ensure UMWT’s enormously popular pickup shall retain its 52% market share.


The pricing which starts at RM89, 900 OTR for the only single cab offering in the range, all the way to the top-of-the-range 2.8G 4×4 automatic, which has a price tag of RM133,900. New performance enhancements in the handsome all-new Hilux include two new GD turbodiesel engines – the 177 hp at 3400rpm & 450 Nm between 1600rpm – 2400rpm 2.8 litre 1GD-FTV, and the 150 hp at 3400 rpm and 400 Nm at 1600 – 2000 rpm 2.4 litre 2GD-FTV motors, a thicker, new six-speed automatic and manual transmissions, a stronger frame and enhanced comfort, safety and convenience features.


Numerous variations and options are available: chrome grille, power-folding chrome door mirrors, front fog lights, 17-inch alloy wheels (18 inch for the range topper), a multi-info display, keyless entry/start, a leather multi-function steering wheel, a drive mode switch (Normal, Eco and Power), a six-way adjustable driver’s seat, a six-speaker DVD infotainment system with a 6.1-inch touchscreen as well as a reverse camera and parking sensors; plus an eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, leather upholstery, Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Active Traction Control (A-TRC) and Hill-Start Assist Control (HAC) as well as International standard safety features as such, along with plenty of accessories and options.


For the 7-seater Fortuner SUV, there’s two models offered by UMWT – automatic transmission only, 2.7 SRZ AT 4×4 petrol and 2.4 VRZ AT 4×4 turbodiesel. The RM199, 900 2.7 SRZ runs on an updated 2TR-FE engine with Dual VVT-i tech that yielded 166 ps at 5200rpm and 245 Nm at 4000rpm. The VRZ 2.4 oil burner (priced at RM186, 900) features the 150 ps & 400Nm 2GD-FTV with common-rail direct-injection and variable nozzle turbocharging. Both variants get a six-speed automatic transmission (petrol adds paddle shifters), which sends power to all four wheels.
