Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM) has finally launched the facelifted Passat 2.0TSI Elegance in Malaysia, four months after its German market launch in September 2019.
The updated Passat Elegance features a refreshed exterior and interior, updated infotainment system with improved connectivity and updated lighting signatures. The brand new facelifted Volkswagen Passat will be available in a single 2.0TSI Elegance variant.
Under the hood is a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine which is slightly detuned compared to the 2.0TSI engine that it replaces. The current engine now produces 190 PS and 320 Nm of torque. Paired to the engine is a new and improved 7-speed wet clutch Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG) just like the one in the Golf R but what’s special is that the Passat is a front-wheel-drive car, making it the first front-wheel-drive Volkswagen model to be equipped with this gearbox in Malaysia.
Based on the real-life driving data defined by the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP), the new Passat Elegance can deliver a combined fuel consumption figure of 6.5L/100KM.
Upfront, you’ll notice the new all-LED headlights which now features a sequential turn signal. Besides that, the front bumper undergoes some slight design changes especially at the bottom end area where there are a new fog-lamp design and a larger bottom grille.
Moving to the rear, there is a new all-LED tail light which features a three-wing taillight design and sequential turn signal. There is also a new ‘Passat’ lettering across the boot. The chrome tailpipes on previous Passat are gone. Rounding up the exterior differences are the new 18-inch ‘Liverpool’ alloy wheels.
Inside the new Passat Elegance, there is a new three-spoke leather multi-function steering wheel with new ergonomic multifunction button, a redesigned door trims and sadly the centre analogue clock is gone being replaced with the Passat lettering. Besides that, there is 30-colour ambient lighting which enhances the interior experience. The rear door panels now have a manual sunblind while the rear windscreen gets a powered sun blinds.
Volkswagen steps up their in-car tech with a new Discover Pro infotainment system which features a large 9.2-inch touchscreen with voice and gesture control and the new Wireless AppConnect system which includes Apple CarPlay. Not only that, there is a new and improved 11.7-inch Digital Cockpit with 2D and 3D graphic display for navigation and media. The front and rear now have three illuminated USB-C ports.
Since this is a premium luxury sedan, the car has ‘KESSY’ (keyless locking & starting system), 3-zone climate control, electric parking brake, electric 12-way front seats with powered lumbar support and driver-side memory with massage function, leather upholstery, auto-dimming rearview mirror, cruise control with speed limiter, rearview camera and manoeuvre braking. There is plenty of room for luggage as the new Passat Elegance has a boot space of 586-litre.
Safety is always the topmost priority when it comes to buying a car and the new Passat Elegance comes packed with them such as the Side Assist with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Blind Spot Monitoring System, Tyre Pressure Monitoring System, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and Brake Assist (BA), Intelligent Crash Response System (ICRS) as well as Hill-hold Control, Automatic Post-Collision Braking System and Proactive Passenger Protection System
The brand new Passat 2.0TSI Elegance is priced at RM 189,012 (on-the-road excluding insurance). Considering all the new and upgraded technology this car has, it is priced lower than the old 2.0TSI Highline that it replaces making the new Passat Elegance a steal. The price includes a 5-year unlimited mileage warranty, 3-year free service package and 5-year roadside assistance.
