I’ve had some short and savory, and indelibly sweet experience with the GLA 45 AMG a little while back, and let me get this out first, a straight up, unrehearsed statement of intent or disclaimer or a symbiotic unified theme of the two: believe all the hype, all the two thumbs up reviews and outtakes and opinions about the GLA 45 AMG! As far as a performance SUV is concerned, nothing comes close to the GLA 45 AMG. As one among a quartet of AMG compact cars, the GLA 45 represents the zenith of what compacts aren’t suppose to be capable of. Simply put the GLA rewrites the entire spectrum of the ‘performance SUV slash compact concept’. That’s all there is to it.
Perhaps it’d be better to let the legendary builders themselves talk the GLA up, seeing as in the annals of world renowned performance purveyors AMG itself resides at a self-anointed pedestal, that reaches way up high, the dizzying height itself predetermined by the many firsts the original Mercedes go faster had pioneered. One big two syllable namesake that epitomized AMG to its core is the one the only Hammer – a tool or device that delivers a blow (a sudden impact) to an object. The usual features are a head (most often made of steel) and a handle (also called a helve or haft). Most hammers are hand tools, but there are also many powered versions, called power hammers (such as steam hammers and trip hammers) for heavier uses, such as forging.
Yeah well that Hammer prescribes the AMG Hammer – the first pure 300km/h saloon that looks stock – a precursor to sleeper cars, and discreet understated speed machines that mows down even the hardiest Ferrari back then and even now, still. Yes well all this is well and good and all, but the mother-lode of the matter being an AMG compact, not an AMG super saloon we’d best be focusing on the finer points of a compact. Nah make that an SUV compact.
The Mercedes-AMG GLA 45 is the most powerful compact sports utility vehicle in the premium segment. The beating heart is a newly developed 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine — the world’s most powerful standard-production 4-cylinder turbocharged engine. That engine churns out 360 hp and 450 Nm with even more impressive fuel consumption figures: 7.5 liters per 100 kilometers, compliance with EU 6 emissions standards – double proofs that at Mercedes-AMG maximum performance does not come at the expense of environmental compatibility. The standard GLA 45 AMG’s driving dynamics is nothing short of impressive: it accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds and reaches a top speed of 250 km/h (electronically limited). Thanks to the combination of standard-fit performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel-drive and the AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed sports transmission, the GLA 45 AMG impresses with its equally sporty and efficient drive system concept.
Impressive huh? What’s that you say? Yeah well so-so? We got the idea, the stellar cast of local Mercedes performance specialist got every aspect of that idea and the owner of this mouth-watering GLA sure as you’d be seeing another Superhero flick, certainly gets the idea. And thus here we are face to front grille with the ultra fine GLA – unofficially the world’s first Carbon Fiber GLA, according to the owner. Commissioning Mr Carbon to do the exterior – massive sizeable chunk of the exterior in actual fact, this GLA features carbon fiber bonnet, fender, spoiler, canard, side skirt and rear diffuser, and together with the 20 inch RAYS G25 alloys this is truly one of the most eye –catching and visually stunning performance SUV compact or what have you to grace any hard copy mags. No question about it.
Governing the punch essence inasmuch a car’s performance could be labeled as punch, is a go-faster program engineered by Project’A consisting oversized turbo with carbon fiber, ARMA dry carbon, Turbosmart blow-off, AMS Alpha Heat Exchanger, Project’A Stage 2 mapping, Remus 3.5 inch downpipe, all in all adding to some 600Nm of torque and 380 hp at the wheel.
Chassis mods were minor considering the GLA 45 AMG’s own setup is already copacetic. Read through the Hyperfacts! for the full modified monty.
