One perfect example of APR Malaysia’s winning formulae is this potent Mk 7 Golf R.
Belonging to the highly accomplished and extremely exclusive Mega Hatch club, the VW Golf R in its current Mk 7 guise is laden with numerous industry benchmarks encompassing its superlative turbocharged engine, its cutting edge powertrain denoting its DSG transmission and its fifth generation 4Motion all-wheel drive system, its state-of-the-art electronically controlled chassis dynamics, and its stellar refinements, all entwined underneath the Golf’s timeless styling inside and out. Indeed, even in its fully standard production trim, the Mk 7 Golf R is undoubtedly impressive.
Its four-cylinder 2.0-litre turbocharged EA888 TSI is already one of the most powerful four-cylinder production engines in the world with 292 hp and 280 lb-ft of tarmac screeching torque. The R’s 2 liter TSI Turbo differs from the GTI’s on the following: a modified cylinder head, exhaust valves, valve seats and springs, pistons, injection valves, larger intercooler and turbocharger. You can imagine with the R’s mighty motor as the base engine for this particular APR Malaysia iteration, there’s quite a bit of fireworks whence APR are done with it.
The optimum performance gain from the APR Stage II tuning was achieved thanks to a number of key upgrades on the intercooler (Wagner) and the intake (VWR R600 Cold air intake), and considerable upgrades of its entire exhaust system (VWR Turbo muffler Delete & catless Armytrix TBE) plus a pair of handy, air flow improving VWR components (the High-Flow Turbo 90 inlet elbow and inlet hose). According to APR’s own quotes its Stage II upgrade achieves more than 30% power and torque increases without a cinch. Rounding up the performance upgrade is the GFB diverter valve for that lightning quick throttle response.
Complimenting the healthy surge in performance is another APR tweak for the R’s DSG transmission – the APR TCU MAP, the ultimate transmission control unit upgrade. It enables quite a bit of plus points such as: faster acceleration, quicker shifts, optimized shift points, increased clutch clamping pressure, smoother daily driving, raised torque limiters, optimized downshift lockout, optimized temperature management, among others.
With his thirst for tractable forced inducted power satisfactorily quenched by the APR treatment, the owner decided that some relatively straightforward components swap was required for his Golf R’s chassis, as it were. Thus a well researched list of aftermarket options was established governing the braking prowess and also the handling dynamics, with the former being given some added attention: VWR 6-pot BBK front brakes kit, oversized VWR rear disc, stainless steel brake hose, plus EBC Yellow pads all around. Handling enhancements comes courtesy of the premium Ohlins DFV coilovers, with VWR endlinks completing the upgrades to the Golf R’s chassis. Well, at least the immediately visible bits anyways; not immediately obvious is the Orsen Shield skid plate under armor installed beneath the undertray.
As per this APR Golf R’s Uber cool ‘pseudo sleeper personification’, just a small number of aftermarket exterior styling options were all that’s needed to give the coolest and most intimidating VW Golf R this side of Wolfsburg. Clad in XPEL Nano full body tint the R’s chiseled nose received a Maxton Design front splitter plus a pair of Carbon6 eyelids, while the rear end had a slightly sportier touch thanks to the Aggrandize rear diffuser from After12 Motorsports. Rounding the APR Golf R’s exterior reworking is the gorgeous RAYS G25 Forged 19 inch rims.
