The Volkswagen GTi is the definition of all things hot hatch. The one car that when first revealed introduced the world to a whole new horizon that you do not have to posses the millions to own a fast and luxurious supercar to have fun. It was the original GTi that paved the way for the masses to experience what I would call cheap thrills. Fast, nippy, poised, compact were the words used to describe the original Mk1 Golf and then some. This was a car that could be driven on a day-to-day basis and yet still possess that kind of ability that allows it to be driven a little harder without compromise.
This car then was a motoring revelation, so impressive that it made people reconsider their options when opting for something fast but having to compromise on driving it only on occasion. The Golf then was a new benchmark for cars that is capable of being chucked around yet being driven in a civilized manner when required to. It was such a sensation that it made the switch for people wanting big bad expensive supercars to this little hot hatch as easy and rapid as it could go through corners without so much of a hassle.
VW’s concept of a well balanced compact car with a perky little engine followed with the Mk2 but sadly it was downhill from there. Over the years, the Golf got bigger, fatter and slower as seen in the Mk4 where it just fell behind the pecking order against the other cars in its class.
Frankly situations like these are not unprecedented in the automotive world, the once motoring heavyweights Lancia, in its heyday produced marvels which dominated the world of rallying such as the Stratos and the Delta Intergrale which boasted 6 World Rally Championship (WRC) wins in a row at the peak of its game. Though Lancia’s fall from grace left us with one last gift in the form of the Intergrale, the similar fate is not to be succumbed by VW.
With the reintroduction of the Mk5 Golf, it can be said that VW has recaptured the true spirit of the GTi and with the all new Mk6, VW’s resurrection of the Golf has definitely held doubters and nay sayers at a silence.
European marques such as the Golf rarely go through what I would call a major power upgrade; these cars are built under certain specifications to make it the best that it can be. As compared to their Japanese counterparts who are usually so radically modified beyond recognition, cars like the Golf are normally kept standard as it was already built to be a great car.
However, this is not to say that there is no room for improvement. Take a peak in this baby’s engine bay and you’d instantly notice a huge carbon fiber engine cover from Exotic Mods that almost certainly wouldn’t fail to wow its first time viewers. Less restricted air-flow produces more power or in simpler terms, more air means more power so the standard air filter is replaced with a GruppeM Carbon Ram System Cold Air Intake unit which kills to birds with one stop for this Golf making the engine bay look more impressive whilst producing additional horsepower.
The sweet exhaust note is enhanced with a REMUS Sports Label Exhaust System while Exotic Mods Custom Engine ECU Stage 2 Remap extracts the extra horsies from the 2.0 liter turbocharged engine, unleashing a staggering 75 more horsepower.
As the Golf already boast supreme handling largely contributed by its 4-wheel drive system, only the addition of H&R Sport Springs are fitted to supplement the cars unbelievable road holding. With the significant horsepower increase, the Brembo Gran Turismo 4-pot Big Brakes Kit at the front does just as good of a job in stopping the car as the remapped ECU does in powering the car to insane speeds. The standard wheels of a car are always the first things in the event of restyling the car and this is no exception on the Golf as it now runs on Savini Forged 20” custom 3pc rims wrapped in sticky Nitto Invo tires.
The most part of the Golf’s interior is left untouched apart from the additions of the TID Styling Aluminum Paddle Shifters, a Pivot 3-Gauge set and an Original VW RNS-510 DVD Touch Screen Player with Navigation however it’s the Golf’s exterior that has experienced a complete makeover compliments from the ingenious designs from Revozport Razor. Starting from the front, the Golf has been fitted with a Revozport Razor Front Bumper with LED Daytime Running Lights and a Revozport Razor Carbon Fiber Front Bumper Splitter which helps improve aerodynamics. A Revozport Razor Carbon Kevlar Hood complimented with a carbon fiber hood vents from Revozport Razor now gives the ever good looking Golf a much meaner stance while Revozport Razor carbon fiber side mirrors covers not only gives the car a more streamline look but also work to help reduce drag at high speeds.
Other kits also from Revozport Razor bestowed upon this Golf are side skirts and fender arches. The original rear bumper has been swapped with one from Revozport Razor with the addition of a Revozport Razor rear bumper diffuser and a rear bumper 3D carbon side diffuser that helps channel air from below the car hence improving downforce of the car. Also providing more downforce to the car especially at high speeds is a carbon fiber roof spoiler from none other than Revozport Razor.
So this Golf may be blessed with the most gorgeous bodykit that money can possibly buy but it is what the Golf was truly made to be that should still impress but with the brilliance of Exotic Mods providing its magic touch in bodykit conversions for the visionary owner of this Golf, the Golf’s new look compliments its telepathic handling; the icing on top of a very delicious mouth-watering cake.
