Brian O’Conner Would Be Proud


I dare you to find a 90s to early 2000s kid who hasn’t heard of Brian O’Conner. Brian is the character played by the late Paul Walker in the Fast and Furious franchise and Brian is somewhat a role model to young petrolheads of the time. He’s the boy who dared to punch above his weight and never backed out of a race no matter how bad the odds were. Despite championing a targa top JZA80 Toyota Supra in the franchise’s first film, Brian is most associated with the Nissan Skyline GTR34. Without a doubt, his portrayal of street racing a, mostly blue, R34 took the already famous R34 to greater heights. It’s one of the reasons why even a GTT body R34 costs a bomb now that it’s a classic.

This one here is a genuine BNR34 specimen. A truly rare beast to come by even in stock form but this is a purists nightmare and a tuners dream all rolled in one. Everything from the bowels of the car to turn signal lights have been modified in some way. The block features a Tomei 2.8L stroker kit with its accompanying components such as pistons, conrod and crankshaft. The head, surprisingly, is fron an R33 but has uprated cams; 272 for exhaust and 264 for intake. To feed its new found appetite, the oil pump, cam pulley, oil buffer, head gasket, valve springs and oil gallery orifice are Tomei parts.

Thanks to ACL race conrod and main bearings, the engine has been fully balanced to handle a thundering 10,000 rpm. That’s superbike territory. The turbine itself is a BorgWarner 7670 unit capable of intense induction. Paired with Tonnka headers, a Tial 50mm wastegate, and a custom 3-inch downpipe, this baby can boost! I shan’t put a figure on its output but you can do the math and come to an educated guess. Not to mention the long list of supporting mods to ensure smooth hiccup-free power delivery and the ARC titanium exhaust system.

The daunting task of harnessing the power and sending them to the wheels is dispatched to a getrag 6 speed gearbox and a fierce Ogura twin plate clutch. Naturally, a build such as this would be gone to waste if it were only about dyno figures. Handling have been given a decent amount of attention with Aragosta hi-lo-soft-hard bodyshift adjustables, with external canisters, and Nismo anti-roll bars. While there are many aftermarket braking systems readily available, this one uses the 6 pot brakes from the R34’s younger brother, the R35. Rest assured, it stops on a dime, especially on the ultra wide 285/35/18 Hankook tyres wrapped around TE37 SL 11j wheels.

The thing with the R34 is its looks. Such an icon it is that building a replica will get plenty of attention, let alone an all rounded machine. A Z-tune bodykit adorns the exterior alongside carbon fibre additions such as the spoiler, front lip and rear diffusers. In tune with modern times, the tail lights have an LED modification with Nismo front and side signal lights. The interior is rightfully neat. No over the top dials, just some red stitching, a couple of GTR logos and some Nismo garnish.

Laying eyes on a build such as this truly takes my breath away. It’s hard to distinguish why. It could be because I grew up with those movies, or it could be the fact that the Nissan Skyline GTR34 is one hell of a JDM weapon.
