Volvo’s decision to reinvent itself not that long ago has gone from strength to strength augmented by its succession of spunky and stylish models portraying that fresh new image. Gone are the non-flattering ‘grandpa’s ride’ tag line associated with that square face 240 which was a common presence on Malaysian roads like way back when, when even the parents of that facebook founder weren’t even dating yet.
The Volvo V50 T5 debuted at the 2003 Bologna Motor Show as the station wagon version of the Volvo S40 small family car. The Volvo V50 is more a ‘lifestyle’ estate than an outright load-carrier such as the V70, however with the rear seats folded, it offers a useful 1307 liters of load space, a very practical and versatile car, with a load area that is well thought out and split rear seats that fold quickly and simply. It offers additional space for carrying stuff that you would normally not be able to load into a sedan.
With such a great car to drive with good but firm ride as a starting point, the owner of this rather unique (for our Malaysian roads) V40 has a good solid base for his chosen go-to guy to do their go & show magic. Nowadays the go-to guys have swelled up in numbers so much so that you need to do some research to make sure you get the right kind of people with the right kind of credentials, and all the appropriate bells and whistles. Enter Megalodon Performance Ventures.
Calling themselves after the biggest most terrifying species of shark to ever existed, Megalodon Performance Ventures have made a name for itself as a bonafide tuner par excellence that focuses on European makes such as VW, BMW and of course Volvo. Their exploits have been well documented over the last few years by Hypertune, and their reputation have hitherto shot up locally with exemplary builds one after another. In short for what the owner demands and expects of his V50, for whatever stratospheric and zany mods he’d dreamt of, he couldn’t have picked a better more qualified tuner than Megalodon Performance Ventures.
Being the Malaysian dealer for Shark Performance UK – a revolutionary tuning company for enthusiasts, by enthusiasts, they provide the best performance software money can buy, on top of a long list of go-faster enhancers. Whether it’s a small boost in power, a desire for better fuel economy or a fully bespoke remap written exactly for your modifications, Shark Performance can help you achieve your goal. With such a depth of highly accomplished repertoire to its name it’s a given that the Megalodon Performance prepared Volvo V50 T5 carries a high degree of panache inside and out.
The T5 turbocharged powerplant has been beefed up with a bevy of upgrades revolving around its Shark Performance Stage 2 tuning software, including a slew of DO88 components – a Swedish brand that supplies its kick-ass silicone hose to Koenigsegg. For this particular Swedish estate there’s DO88 intercooler kit, turbo inlet pipe kit and coolant hose kit. Now bear with me for a bit here apart from the DO88 brand another relatively unfamiliar brand is Elevate which is to Volvo enthusiasts what Justin Bieber is to teenage girls, kinda. The Elevate inlet manifold with its precision cast 356-T6 construction, in this build does some incredible performance enhancing wonders not the least its hefty power gains.
Moving on, JR air filter does its bid in optimizing air flow into the blown motor, while spent gases exits via 3 inch custom exhaust connected to a WZ 2.5 inch catback. Enhanced cooling requirements received an external engine oil cooler, plus a custom external ATF cooler for the transmission.
Chassis enhancements are extensive; for starters there’s the Polestar Performance Chassis Kit – a package of new dampers and stiffer springs from the official Volvo Cars performance company. Chassis strengthening parts comes in next, with ERST rear toe bar, Ultra Racing strut bar for the front end and Elevate rear adjustable camber arm. Uprated brakes come in the form of AP Racing 4-pot clamping 330mm diameter WZ discs, with HEL steel-braided hoses.
Exterior enhancements were kept to a minimum and rightly so, as the V50 is to me one of the classier looking estates from Europe for some time. With a modestly lowered stance the owner opted for an 18 inch OZ Racing alloys (painted black) shod with RE003 Potenza. The interior was kept pretty much stock.
