The petrol engine is dead. Long live the diesel.
Okay, that’s a bit of an exaggeration, but one cannot deny that diesel performance tuning is gaining popularity. One day we may even see diesel powered trucks capable of outrunning the hottest tuned boy racer hatchbacks.
The combination of modern diesel engine technology and aftermarket ECUs has given the humble and unloved diesel engine a renaissance of sorts. Suddenly, extracting true performance out of a diesel engine didn’t seem so ridiculous anymore.
There are two factors which contributed to this diesel renaissance. First was the introduction of commonrail technology which replaced the typical low pressure fuel pump and injectors fueling system with a high pressure fuel rail with solenoid valves system. The switch to commonrail technology allowed for more precise fueling which in turn, results in a more powerful and efficient diesel engine. Second, was the introduction of turbochargers and we all know what a turbocharger can do for an internal combustion engine.
Now that diesel engines have become more potent, it just irks me that the only modern diesel engines we Malaysians get come in trucks and lorries. Imagine how much fun a 2-litre, turbodiesel engine in a hatchback would be. All that torque…
But I digress. New from H Performance, is the Power Lab diesel tuning program. Created by our innovative neighbours in the North (that’s Thailand for the geographically challenged), the Power Lab tuning program can be had in three different stages.
Stage 1 – Power Lab Diesel Management System or DMS
The Power Lab DMS is a piggyback ECU specially created for today’s modern commonrail diesel engines. What’s different about the DMS is that it does more than just increase the pressure in the commonrail. Power Lab’s DMS takes the true rpm value along with the true throttle position sensors values (TPS), the MAF (mass air flow) and MAP (manifold absolute pressure) sensor readings and parameters for calculating the duration of the commonrail spray, to help perfectly collaborate the fuel and air ratio inducted by the turbocharger.
Stage 2 – Power Lab Fuel Pressure Controller or FPC
Power Lab’s FPC does exactly as it says; it raises the fuel pressure in the commonrail for more power. This can also be used without the Power Lab DMS and power gains of 20% to 30% are common, depending on current engine mods and settings.
Stage 3 – Power Lab Boost Control Device or BCD
Power Lab’s Boost Control Device unlocks the boost cut in the stock ECU map, which paves the way for even more power gains and bypasses that pesky check engine light.
H Performance invited us to a dyno session with representatives from Power Lab where Power Lab’s DMS, FPC and BCD were fitted to a Toyota Hilux. In stock form, the Hilux made a measly 82.5hp and 228Nm of torque at the wheels. With the Power Lab products fitted and tuned, the Hilux nearly doubled its power output! The Hilux was now pushing out a scarcely believable 160.9hp and a whopping 385Nm of torque.
According Power Lab’s representatives, they’ve tuned Hilux’s in Thailand with aftermarket turbos which are capable of over 400hp and 600Nm of torque! Apparently, this truck’s a real handful, in the wet AND the dry. Sounds like fun, fun, fun to me.
