HKS Power!

A good rule of thumb to follow when it comes to increasing your engine’s power output is to take care of the basic mods like the intake and the exhaust first, then retuning the ECU with either a reflash or piggyback ECU to make the most of the intake and exhaust mods. Standalone engine management systems would be overkill, but if you can afford one, go for it. A good mantra to live by is “Always buy the best you can afford.”

The HKS FCon iS has been around for a while now and is the latest evolution of HKS’ piggy-back engine management systems. The iS features the same proven fuel and timing control as the SZ and S, but also incorporates data correction for close-loop A/F feedback from the factory Oxygen Sensor. According to HKS, the FCon iS’ CPU performance has also been improved by 25%.

This Vios has had the basics covered with the intake and exhaust modifications, and even has a comprehensive grounding system to boost the electrical system’s efficiency. Hopefully, we’ll be able to get a decent increase in power and torque with the Fcon iS. Typically, naturally aspirated cars make only about 5-7bhp (most times even less) at the wheels at the very most with a simple piggyback ECU, but the FCon iS isn’t just another piggyback ECU. It is one of the more advanced piggybacks available on the market today.

As usual, the car was strapped to the dyno for a baseline dyno run where it made 86.75PS at the wheels and 11.62kg/m of torque. The car was left to cool down while the FCon iS was installed. Installation was fairly simple and once that was done, Vision were ready to start tuning.

After about 30-45 minutes of tuning and trying to squeeze every little ounce of power the FCon iS would liberate, Vision finally arrived at 96.10PS and 12.58kg/m of torque, an increase of 9.35PS and 0.96kg/m, a pretty decent increase for a puny 1.5-litre naturally aspirated engine which has been tuned with a piggyback ECU.

Typically we won’t see this much of an increase and this just goes to show what a difference a piggyback ECU on the higher end of the price range makes when compared to a typical piggyback ECU. It’s always a good idea to invest a little bit more in a good ECU because a good ECU will also open up your options for more serious modifications in the future, such as forced induction.
