The glamorously stylish all new Toyota Vios has finally arrived and could not have come at a better time. With Chinese New Year just around the corner, the star of the KL International Motor Show 2018 is expected to be a sales hit. Given its specifications, we are not surprised at all.
This updated model of the 3rd Generation Vios receives a major facial reconstruction. The new design language screams both class and sportiness at the same time making it as captivating as the first gen Vios from 2003. Catering to the family sedan and to the inner automotive enthusiast. The fresh 16-inch alloy rims and sporty paddle shifters on the high spec model definitely has our attention.
The list of available safety features is longer this time. 5-Star ASEAN NCAP safety rating, seven SRS airbags, Vehicle Stability Control and Hill-Start Assist Control are just compulsory safety features buyers have come to expect. The Vios now boasts features that used to only be available in larger segment Toyota models. Blind Spot Monitors, Panoramic View Monitor, Front Digital Video Recorder and Rear Cross Traffic Alert come as standard across the variants.
Drivetrain remains untouched, aside from the aforementioned paddle shifters. In car facilities are improved with a couple of design tweaks, an extra USB port, more cubby holes, quieter ride thanks to insulation and fully automatic air conditioning. Certain goodies like the epicly named, Optitron meter and DVD-AVX Infotainment with USB mirroring is exclusive to the Vios 1.5G, the highest spec among the 3 variants available. The Vios will also be the first model to grace UMW Toyota Motor’s new manufacturing facility in Klang. Prices start at RM77,200.00 for the Vios 1.5J, RM81,200.00 for the Vios 1.5E and finally RM87,300.00 for the 1.5G.
Popularity for the Toyota Vios significantly hiked up with Gazoo Racing. This street circuit championship pits drivers against one another in identical machines. Power upgrades are not allowed so there are no unfair advantages. It comes down solely to precise handling tuning, teamwork and skill. To liven things up abit, the Vios Challenge features ten local celebrities behind the wheel, rubbing body panels with one another to the chequered flag.
Toyota Gazoo Racing championship runs for four races and takes the entire circus to various states across Malaysia, exposing the nature of motorsports. With the first two races completed late last year, race 3 and 4 will take place in February and April 2019 at Penang and Sepang respectively.
Without a doubt, the arrival of the refreshed Vios will invite more people to the Gazoo Racing Festivals. For us petrolheads, heading down to the Gazoo races help give us an idea on how to make our own Vios perform better. Watching these stock drivetrain cars pound round at insane speeds provides a massive high. Handling would the number one go to mod if you’re looking to sharpen your own Vios up. Drop it on some sport springs, chuck in a couple of strut bars, performance brake pads and you my friend are good to go. But of course, to each man his own. For now let’s sit back and watch while the new Vios continues to dominate the segment as it has been doing for a long time.
