This is one S13 Silvia which needs no further introduction. Yoong’s S13 is quite possibly the most famous and most talked about S13 in Malaysia, not only for being one of the first to wear the Rocket Bunny kit but also for its exposure at racing events, autoshows, and facebook. Those who have known Yoong for many years would know of this car’s history and stages of evolution, but if you don’t here’s a quick rundown.
It started life as a humble stock standard black colour S13, serving as one of the primary representative of the now-defunct drift.com.my website. When D1GP first came to Malaysia the S13 briefly changed from black to yellow for competition. Finally, Yoong decided to give it the complete works and sent it to Garage R in Singapore, who threw every possible item from the HKS catalogue into his S13. It was then the S13 stuck to its current red colour, and even wore HKS livery for a period of time.
Fun fact: HKS works driver, Nobuteru Taniguchi, drove the car before and was impressed with it.
When I mentioned that Garage R threw in every possible item from the HKS catalogue it wasn’t the whole truth. Garage R also put in parts from other brands and manufacturers. Seriously though, a lot of care and work has gone into the build of this machine, and writing about the spec list itself would have probably filled up half of this article. To sum it up Yoong’s S13 is technically a full-fledged track machine, but he decided to keep it street legal with air conditioning!
I won’t list out everything (I don’t think I have enough writing space for it), but here is the summary of important details. The engine has been fully rebuilt with balanced pistons, conrods and crankshaft, and fitted with NISMO bearings. The pistons are overbored 87mm forged items. The head has been ported and polished by Garage R with HKS camshafts and valves fitted in, and uses ARP head studs. The turbocharger is a HKS GT2835R kit, which is good for approximately 420hp and gives the SR20 linear torque and power figure. The kit includes a HKS special racing wastegate, intercooler, intercooler piping, a custom Garage R racing suction kit, air filter, and blow-off valve. The fueling system consists of more HKS parts, mixed together with parts from Walbro, SARD, Magneti Marelli, and a Permacool fuel cooler. The Kakimoto exhaust system has been modified with a custom rectangle tip for space clearance.
The engine management is, you guessed it, all HKS: 1x F-Con V Pro fuel and ignition timing computer, 1x pro start, 1x mixture controller, and 1x EVC 5 boost controller kit. Vital monitoring is taken care of by a full set of Defi gauges, and a Stack fuel level meter. All the electronic components and meter panels are arranged neatly along the dashboard and center console with custom carbon fiber fittings.
This S13 is by no means a show queen, and it spends its days happily at drift, gymkhana and circuit events. With the amount of power this machine generates the standard transmission had to undergo gym training as well. Now armed with an Exedy racing clutch, Cusco 1.5-way LSD, various NISMO parts, and an URAS transmission mount, the drivetrain is able to withstand anything thrown at it.
The brake setup on the S13 could stop an asteroid on a collision course toward Earth. On the front you have the monstrous ISC 6 pot brake calipers with the 330mm brake rotors. On the rear are stock calipers with Endless brake rotors and brake shoe lining. The brake pads are a combination of Dixcel graphite ceramic pads and Endless super street pads. And to give it the extra edge, there’s even a Tilton brake bias adjuster thrown in.
A HKS parts-car needs to have HKS Hipermax D’ dampers, otherwise it wouldn’t be complete. Along with that Yoong upgraded a lot of his suspension compenents to Ikeya Formula items, a brand he has always trusted for his rides. The chassis has also been strengthened with seam welding, various bracing/bars, and Super Pro bushes.
The interior is all business and fully stripped out. The cabin is protected with an SRF fabricated 15-point rollcage, roll bar padding, and a 1.6mm fire retardant heat shield for the firewall. The driver’s chair is a Bride Zeta III FIA-approved full bucket seat with Takata racing 4-point harness to keep Yoong planted firmly.
Taking center stage of the car is none other than the TRAKYOTO 6666 CUSTOMS “Rocket Bunny” kit, provided by Drift House. Yoong further enhanced the kit with custom made canards, splitter, diffuser, undertrays, and a good-looking GT Wing. The lights have been updated from the old orange lenses to newer clear crystal pieces. Elmo rolls on a set of 18 inch WedsSport TC105N alloy wheels with Champiro SX2 tyres supplied by Yoong’s sponser, GT Radial.
It’s difficult to convey one man’s passion and love for his ride into an article, but it is something all car enthusiasts can relate to. It has taken 7 years of toil and dedication for Elmo to reach this level, but Yoong still isn’t finished with this project yet. As the machine continues to grow and evolve further we’ll be keeping a very close watch on it.
